Self Care Week: Four Ways to Relieve Stress

Self Care Week runs from the 13th to the 19th November, and seeks to empower people to look after their own health. One of the biggest issues we all have to deal with on a daily basis is stress, which comes in many different forms. If we allow chronic stress to build up it can have severe impacts on our overall wellbeing and can lead to burnout, anxiety and depression. The good news is that there are ways we can help keep stress in check!

1) Fostering a Positive Mind-Set

Our mind-set and our thoughts are powerful. We tend to deal with stress better when we have an optimistic outlook in life. The health benefits that come with a positive mind-set are far-reaching and include lower levels of depression, improved resistance to colds and enhanced coping skills during times of hardship. This is why developing a positive mind-set is our top tip!

2) Quality Time with Loved Ones

Just as we need to continuously foster relationships with our friends and colleagues, we also need to ensure we spend quality time with loved ones. Simple actions like giving someone a hug, or laughing with them can release stress busting hormones. By interacting with our close support network, we also help keep connections strong and get a new perspective on any problems that we’re dealing with.

3) Exercising

Exercise releases endorphins which help reduce stress and anxiety. Swimming, running and even taking a stroll can help us overcome some of the effects of stress. Exercise can result in improved sleep, concentration and self-confidence, and also cuts the risk of developing serious illnesses!

4) Steering Clear of Bad Habits

When stress builds, it’s all too easy to turn to alcohol, smoking or unhealthy food as a way of coping. However, these methods of dealing with stress are not effective over the long term and can instead create a whole new range of problems.
